It’s very rare to discover a song where the lyrics, the music and even the video all combine together into one perfect, synchronized piece that sends one clear message to the audience. It’s even rarer to find a song that embodies an emotion so well, that practically forces you to relate to the lyrics and find something of the artist within yourself.
And that makes such discoveries even more joyous. I recently had the pleasure of finding such a gem, in Anjelica’s “Good Ones”.
To give you a bit of background, Anjelica was once dubbed “a young Christina Aguilera” by American Idol judge Simon Cowell. Now, no disrespect to Mr. Cowell, obviously, but I would say that’s a colossal understatement. As someone who used to be an Aguilera fan in my youth, I’d say Anjelica is ten times what Aguilera was. At least.
With a mellow thundering epic movie groove and a stylish, classy world beating atmospheric production, ‘Angelica’ proves she is one of the ‘Good Ones’ – Groove Mag UK
Her music is so raw and genuine that it strikes a chord with even the most hardened of listeners. It will move you, even if you don’t show it. It has a sneaky way of scuttling into your soul and latching unto you so that you can never shake it off. It’s got the gentle, quiet attitude of a rain drop, but the power of a hurricane resides inside.
And then, there’s Anjelica’s voice. And I don’t quite know what to say about it, because it’s just so honest and painful (but in a good way), and just mesmerizing. It’s the sort of voice that psychologists use to hypnotize people with.
It’s the sort of voice that could sing anything on this earth and make you feel like you’re listening to the best song ever written.
But what I like most about “Good Ones” is that it comes from the heart. It’s well-imbibed with feelings of loss and guilt, with struggles, and most of all, with the plain-old heartache that comes from missing someone. In fact, it’s so personal that it feels a little wrong to be listening to it. A little like you’re invading this woman’s intimacy, because this feels like a call to the person she’s missing, and it will bring tears to your eyes. Even if you have a heart made of stone.
Before I wipe my own eyes, I’d just like to take my hat off to this remarkable woman, and tell you that if you’re not following her already, you’re missing out.
